The Southold Town Board of Trustees regulates any
activity along the shoreline of the Town and its inland wetlands.
Generally, these actions include structural improvements to property
and excavation and removal of vegetation, cutting of tree, etc within 100 feet of wetlands or open water,
dredging, the construction of docks, ramps, floats, pilings, moorings,
bulkheads or any stabilization structures.
Any approvals from this Board do not constitute
approvals from any other agencies.
A NYS Department of Environmental Conservation permit may also
be required for your proposed activity.
If the activity is in navigable waters you may have to get a
permit from the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers.
A Wetland Permit is required for any
activities within 100 feet of any wetland or surface waters in the
Town. The Trustees Lands permit applies to all moorings, piles,
docks, bulkheads, and other in-water structures and activities.
If you have questions regarding whether the Trustees have any
jurisdiction over your activity, please contact the Trustees. The
Trustees or their representatives will assist you in making this
determination.
A Coastal Erosion Permit is required for
any activity proposed within the Town’s Coastal Erosion Hazard Area.
The Coastal Erosion Hazard Area is defined on the Town’s
Coastal Erosion Hazard Area Map, which generally covers the shoreline
and near shore areas along the Long Island Sound, Fishers Island
Sound, Block Island Sound and selected bay front areas in East Marion
and Orient. If you have
questions as to whether your property lies within a Coastal Erosion
Hazard Area, please contact the Office of the Trustees and either the
Trustees or their representative will assist you in making this
determination. Also,
please be aware that if a proposed regulated activity requiring a
Coastal Erosion Permit is proposed within 100 feet of a wetland or
Sound/Bay, then an application for a Wetlands Permit is also required.

PECONIC BAY IS A NO DISCHARGE ZONE
Town pump out
boat offers a free service which is available weekends between Memorial Day and September
30. It can be contacted on VHF Channel 73.
Use them! We
want to protect the life of our bay, and pumping raw sewage into the
bay causes pollution, algae blooms, possible diseases for shellfish
areas, and can close areas for swimming.
The following
pump-outs are located in the Town of Southold:
-
Cutchogue
Harbor Marina, Wickham Creek, Cutchogue
-
Brewer’s
Marina, Greenport
-
Sterling
Harbor Marina, Greenport
-
Port of
Egypt Marina, Southold
-
Brick Cove
Marina
The costs for
pumping out your boat varies. Some of the marinas have obtained grants
from the state to pay for these facilities and it will only cost the
boat owner a small fee. Others don’t have the grants and the boat
owners are charged a per gallon fee for pump out.
Please check
with the marina for updated information. |
