Parking and Disposal Permit Information

Permits are issued on a calendar year basis and are available as early as the first week in December for the upcoming year. Disposal Permits are available at the Town Clerk’s office as well as by mail (See mailing instructions below).  Parking Permits are available at the Town Clerk’s Office and by mail. The Town Clerk’s Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:00PM.  Please see Q. & A. Section for specific information.

Disposal Permits allow entry into the Collection Center to dispose of household garbage which must be in Yellow Town Bags or to dispose of bulk items (you will be weighed on the scale and charged accordingly).  If you are disposing of recyclables only, a permit is not necessary.  For those who choose not to purchase a disposal permit, a $5.00 Single Entry Fee can be paid  at the Collection Center.

Parking/Beach Permits are necessary to park at Southold Town Beaches and road endings that Require a Southold Town Permit.  Certain beaches belong to the Park Districts and do not come under Southold Town jurisdiction.   Please see Guide to North Fork Parks & Beaches for more information on both the Town Beaches and Park District Beaches.

Daily Parking Permits are issued to a specific vehicle for a specific date.  Please provide the plate number and the date you plan to use it. These permits may be purchased at the Town Clerk’s Office or at the three (3) Town Beaches with Beach Attendants 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  These permits are only valid at the Town Beaches that also sell them. 

New Suffolk Beach: is located on Jackson Street in New Suffolk and provides lifeguards and beach attendants.  A boat launching ramp and ample parking facilities are available, by town permit only, for the general public.

Town Beach: is located on the North Road (Route 48) in Southold, overlooking the sound.  This is the most used town-owned beach.  Facilities include restrooms, playground, a picnic area and a beach wheelchair for disabled patrons.  Parking by Southold Town permit only.  Beach has lifeguards and beach attendants on duty during the summer.

Norman E. Klipp Park: is located on Manhanset Avenue in Greenport and is also known as Gull Pond Beach.  The beach overlooks Shelter Island and contains a large parking area, playground and has lifeguards and beach attendants on duty in the summer. Parking and boat launching by Southold Town permit only.

Both the Disposal and Parking Permits can be obtained by mail.  Simply mail us your request with your name, telephone number and the address you would like your permits mailed to, along with the proper documentation (See Q & A Section), and a check made payable to Southold Town Clerk to:

Question & Answer Section   

Who is considered a resident?

Those whose name appear on the deed or those who reside here on a year round basis – your vehicle registration does not show the local address.

What documentation do I need in order to obtain resident permits (stickers)?

Your vehicle registration or a copy of it.  We must validate your license plate number.

What about my driver’s license or my insurance card?

No, they do not include your license plate number.

What if my car is not registered to my Southold address?

We still must see the registration – and if you have just  recently purchased the property and are not on our tax rolls yet –  please provide us with your deed or a photocopy of it.

Do I need to show my registration every year?

Yes,  we must see your registration each year.

Will you accept a utility bill to prove residency?

No,  we do not accept utility bills.

Can a sticker be used for more than one vehicle?

No, each vehicle to be used must have its own sticker.

Do I need a sticker for both my car and for the trailer I’m towing?

No, only the vehicle towing the trailer needs a sticker.

Are my children entitled to a resident sticker?

Only if they reside with you on a year round basis and their registration verifies that.  Otherwise, as the resident, you may purchase a Guest Permit for them.  Please provide us with their license plate number.

Can I purchase Guest Permits for friends as well as family?

Yes, please provide us with their name, address and license plate number.

Am I entitled to permits if I am a seasonal renter?

Yes,  you may purchase Lessee Permits.  Please provide us with your lease and vehicle registration. (Photocopies are acceptable)

What if my stickers get lost or fall off my bumper?

They can be replaced free of charge.  Please provide us with the receipt issued at the time of purchase.

If I purchase a different vehicle can I exchange the old stickers for new ones free of charge?  

If you do not change your license plates, simply  provide us with the receipt issued at the time of purchase.

If you change your license plates, please provide us with the original sticker issued to you OR the green stub from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles showing the original plates were relinquished, along with the new registration & the receipt issued at the time of purchase.
