Southold Town Hamlet Stakeholder Initiative

Community input plays an essential role in planning for the future of the Town of Southold.  The hamlet stakeholder initiative represents a cornerstone of community participation.   From 2004-2005, hamlet stakeholders from eight hamlets assisted the Town’s planning efforts and in June 2005, the Town Board accepted the stakeholder recommendations.

In 2007, Supervisor Scott Russell convened hamlet stakeholders (former stakeholders and new volunteers) to advance the implementation of the 2005 Hamlet Study findings to further define a vision statement for each Hamlet.  In addition to the original eight hamlets, Fishers Island also developed a series of recommendations through its stakeholders and several residents from the Village of Greenport joined the Greenport hamlet stakeholder group.

Newly convened groups prioritized short and long term planning projects outlined in the original study as well as disseminated information to residents within their respective community to develop public consensus.  Reports of recommendations were submitted to the Planning Board and Town Board.  Currently Town departments are addressing and advancing many stakeholder recommendations.

Below are links, by hamlet, to the hamlet stakeholder initiatives that include:  committee members, original 2005 hamlet study, hamlet center and HALO maps, current stakeholder recommendations and status reports.
